Media invite: Teochew Festival 新加坡潮州节 2014 [extended till 06 oct 2014!]

If you haven't know, for the first time in Singapore, the public have a rare opportunity to be immersed in the heritage of Teochews at the exciting Singapore Teochew Festival 新加坡潮州节!

The Singapore Teochew Festival is organised in conjunction with the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan’s grand 85th anniversary celebrations in Singapore and aims to renew awareness within the community as well as ignite interest among the public on the many facets of Teochew culture.

I'm not a Teochew but I'm very keen in the event! It's always good to learn more about each other's cultures ya? :)

And I guess, I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Proudly organised and presented by the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan 潮州八邑会馆, this ticketed event will be held from 25 September to 5 October 2014, 11am to 10pm daily at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

For just S$5 per ticket (entry only, GST included), visitors will be captivated by the following sections – Culture & Heritage, Food & Beverage and Arts & Crafts.

The turn up at the festival was amazing! Not just the older ones, we have a fair mix of the younger generations as well!

No surprise, the Teochew food street is definitely the most popular attraction!

The food street is comprised of 15 vendors, cooking up mouth-watering Teochew fare that is characterised by fresh ingredients and light cooking styles.

Lucky us, we were able to try some of the items available at the festival.

Pig’s trotter terrine from Chin Lee Restaurant.

It is not common that we see pig's trotter terrine or 猪脚冻 nowadays. Have to admit it doesn't look all appealing to eat. But it was actually quite good as an appetizer! You may want to imagine yourself having a savoury jelly. ^^

Chin Lee Restaurant is located in Bedok and this well-known restaurant also serves their suckling pig, prawn rolls and liver rolls at the event as well!

Fishball and fishcake from Li Xin Restaurant.

the fishball has a really good bouncy texture!

Fried kway teow with preserved radish from Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine.

This traditional restaurant is well-recognised as the‘go to’ destination for fine Teochew cuisine. With just a taste of their char kway teow and I'm sold. In fact, all of us were full of praises for this fried kway teow. You have to try this when you're here!

Teochew pau, siew mai and crystal dumpling from Swatow Seafood Restaurant.

I have been to Swatow Seafood Restaurant for their dim sum for quite a few occasions (click here to read). I love their soft and fluffiness pau skin! Special mention to the crystal dumpling with red bean filling. It was soft but definitely not lacking the chewy factor of a crystal dumpling's skin as well.

Now, those were local stalwarts. Let me introduce you to some of the vendors who have specially flew over to Singapore for the festival.

Various steamed dumplings with fillings (red bean, preserved turnip and crystal) from Ping Ping Ju.
Ping Ping Ju 平平居 is a snack specialist that is well-known for homemade favourites such as rice cakes 饭粿, red bean dumplings 红豆饺, preserved vegetable dumplings 菜脯饺 and the distinctive Shantou speciality of mouse shell dumplings 鼠壳粿 – rice flour dumplings made with the ‘mouse shell’ plant and green beans.

Orh luak (oyster omelette) from Ah Biao.

Ah Biao 阿彪蚝烙 is an oyster pancake specialist, from Shantou. This is for sure one of the most popular stall at the food street, but it will worth all the wait. The oysters served were really HUGE, crispy pancake was also a plus point as well!

Braised duck from Jian Ye Restaurant.

Famous for their braised duck, Jian Ye has specially flew in their ducks all the way from Shatou as well! For sure it was a taste of authentic in every bite.

Gingko nuts with root tuber soup from Mi Qi.

Mi Qi 米奇甜品 is a dessert specialist that will serve sweet yam paste, roasted yam and sweet potatoes. I've no doubt in that because these glutinous rice balls were one of the best I've ever tried!

A very much satisfying stomach after all the yummy Teochew food. ^^

If you haven't make your way to Teochew Festival, no worries. You haven't missed much! The event is till 5 October! You still have some time to bring your family and friends along! I personally feel that the event is very suitable for a family day out, especially if you have old grandparents at home. I'm sure the event would be quite nostalgic for some. ^^
