Recipe: Herbal Claypot Pig's Trotters

On some nights, I decided that it's time to come back to my roots. I shall cook something Chinese! Haha! :D

So here goes the highlight of the night - claypot pig's trotters. Not the usual, vinegar with gingers though. I made a herbal one using Huiji Waist Tonic

When Huiji sent me the product for review, I asked myself, "what should I do with the tonic drink?"

Commonly, Huiji Waist Tonic is added into Chicken Soup to enhance the overall herbal taste or it could be added to steam chicken/fish.

But, like I always do, I don't like to 'follow recipe' or rather, 'follow the crowd'. Haha! Decided to 'play' in the kitchen again and conduct my very own 'experiment'. Heh. :P

Not easy to be my family ya? If my experiment failed that means they have to stomach in my failed products. Hahaha! :P

Just add in 2 cups (cup given) of Huiji Waist Tonic half way through the cooking.

Ingredients
Pig's trotters - chopped into chunks
2 tbsp cooking oil
3 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp dark sweet soy sauce
2 cinnamon sticks
4 star anises
1 piece young gingers, cut into stripes
water
2 cup full of Huiji Waist Tonic

optional:
Tau Pok
Tau Kwa
Hard Boiled Eggs
Chinese mushrooms
Mei Cai, persevered vegetable
Pork belly (because pig's trotters not meaty enough. :P)

Method:
1. Blanch pig's trotters in hot water. Set aside.

2. Heat wok with 2 tbsp cooking oil, add in the 3 tbsp brown sugar and allow it to caramelise. When caramelised, add in blanched pig's trotters and gingers. The trotters will be coated with a nice brown colour.

3. Add in light soy sauce and sweet soy sauce. Stir well.

4. Add in just enough water to cover the trotters. Bring to boil. (If you're adding the optional ingredients, you should add them in here.)

5. When boiled, reduce to medium low fire, cook for 1.5hours. Pour in the 2 cups of Huiji Waist Tonic 15minutes before the time is up.

6. Best serve with rice! ^^

Alternative - slow cooker method

4. Transfer the trotters into a slower cooker, add just enough water to cover the trotters and other ingredients (if any). Let the slow cooker do the cooking, I usually leave it on for about 3 hours!

Although this is a review set from Huiji, but I still have to say that my parents love the tonic drink! For the longest time, they always have the impression that the drink is very sweet, so they actually refused to drink? Haha!

Glad that they tried and love the herbal taste! Myth busted as well! Because Huiji

Waist Tonic DOES NOT contain any additional sugar or alcohol! It is made with 100% natural herbs, including cordyceps, ginseng, du zhong, dang gui, shouwu and da zao!

Very chim herbal names eh?

Nevermind, just remember that Huiji Waist Tonic can help alleviate backache, overcome fatigue, build vitality and nourish vital energy, promote blood circulation, and help with cold hand and feet!

One of the best Father's Day gift I can think of for now! ^^

Father’s Day promotion – Huiji Waist Tonic + Huiji Honeymums Tea Banded Pack 10s @ $49.80!

Huiji Honeymums drink is a sweet and very refreshing drink especially for this weather! It can be served both hot or cold. I like to drink it cold of course! ^^

Why not this Father's Day cook a nutritional dinner at home for dear daddy? ^^

Alright, maybe trotters are not the most nutritional item on a nutritionist's list. So I added a tonic drink to balance it right? Bahahaha! :P

Food like this is best served with a bow of rice, AT LEAST. And the rice has to be soaked with the richness of the gravy. :D

My take on Taiwan's Lu Rou Fan. ^^

Love,
Lirong.
