Review: Ponggol Nasi Lemak + Chye Seng Huat Hardware + Milk& Honey @ Jalan Besar

Have been wanting to visit this cafe for the longest time! Had that they are really good with their coffees! So happy that we finally found the time to pay Chye Seng Huat Hardware a visit. ^^

Are you getting confused with my words? Hardware shop selling coffees?

Yup. Yup! It used to be a hardware shop if I'm not wrong. Until a group of people took over the space to revamp it into a cafe, still keeping the original name.

I would say Chye Seng Huat is part of the first wave in Singapore's cafe scene? So far they have been doing really good despite the huge competition in the industry!

We reached the place about 11am and it was mad crowded~

Oh well, It was a weekend so we kinda expected it to be crowded.

When at Chye Seng Huat, you can't go away without having their coffee. Yup. Applies for a person like me who hardly drinks coffee. Heh. :P

Coincidentally they were having a special anniversary brew ($12) that day! Of course we can't miss the chance to order it!

We sat at the counter, where the barista is, and had a good 'coffee appreciation' session with him. Haha! He was really nice to explain to us about their special anniversary brew, called Juliette by the way. It's really special! Unlike the typical hand brew (which I honestly didn't like because of that strong black coffee taste), Juliette is lighter and tasted somewhat tea like!

But it was until later when I went to Joe & Dough for coffee appreciation then I fully understood what the barista at CSHH had told us that day. Hahaha!

Weather was hot so I chose for something cold too! ^^ CSHH's cold brew, $7.

Quiche of the day, $5.50.

It was a ham & mushroom one which was not bad!

Appreciate that CSHH helped us to heat up the quiche because some cafes actually just serve cold quiche? :/

They have outdoor seating as well! But I'm sure with the brutal weather nowadays, no one of the right mind will want to be found under the sun. Haha!

Anyway, we saw people ordering their brunch set which looks so good! Especially that scrambled eggs! Will want to come back for their food next time! :D

We left shortly because we had a lunch tasting at Ponggol Nasi Lemak!

Yup! So the famous Ponggol Nasi Lemak opened a flagship outlet at Jalan Besar recently! This is actually their 3rd outlet and it features a fast-food style concept. Guess what?

It is fully air-conditioned!! AWESOMEEEEEEE~

The flagship outlet carries the usual all time favourites as well as premium house special, which of course is only available here.

They were have affordable set menus here!

I'm sure if you have been to Ponggol Nasi Lemak at any of the outlets, you would find that a plate of nasi lemak isn't exactly cheap (especially when you're tempted to order all their all-time-fave!) . But now, with the set menu, the price is much more competitive and reasonable!

But!

Do note that currently, the set menu is only available at Jalan Besar's outlet~

Queuing to order our food! As mentioned, it's a fastfood concept here! ^^

You just have to tell the lady what you want to have on your customised plate and tadah~ wish granted. ^^

Our choices! Glutton or what? HAHA!

His fav was the fried chicken while mine was the otah! :D

We also tried the premium in house specialities as well! ^^

Grilled Japanese Squid with Special Sauce, $7.50.

One of Mr Tan and my fav! Would highly recommend this because the squid was so well-grilled! Smelled so good I tell you! It was QQ but not overly chewy as well and the sauce makes a huge different to the squid.

Crispy Chicken Skin with Curry Leaves, $1.50 per serving/ $4.70 per tub.

This is probably every doctor's nightmare? Hahahha! But not to worry, it was made less sinful with the fat carefully removed from under the skin before triple fried. Have to say that it was really flavourful. But.. very guilty after a few mouths.. Hahaha! I suggest you order this to share! ^^

Crispy Battered Whole Prawn, $3.80 for 2 pieces.
Crispy Battered Fish Fillet, $3.80 for 2 pieces.

Ok. You know what? Don't bother sharing this platter. JUST ORDER ONE FOR YOURSELF! The boy and I were literally fighting over this? HAHAHA! I love the fish fillet especially! So nicely fried and didn't taste greasy at all!

FYI, only live prawns and fresh fillets are being used!

Signature Ngoh Hiang, $1.50 per piece.

I like how they use huge chunk of chestnuts which gave an extra bite. But compared to the battered prawns and fillet, the ngoh hiang was too oily for our liking! Could feel the oil exploding in our mouth. >.<

Food coma right after this meal. HAHAHA!

Homemade ice cream and sorbet, $2.50 per cup.

Only available at this flagship outlet as well!

The homemade ice cream and sorbet came in a variety of flavours!

Sorbet selections include: raspberry mango, lemongrass lime, pink guava, kyoho grape, passionfruit and blood orange.

Ice cream selections include: milo, peanut butter milk, horlick and green tea.

Of course sorbet would be a more refreshing choice, which Mr Tan prefers. On the other hand I still like my ice cream more! My picks would be the peanut butter milk and horlick!

Homemade hibiscus ice tea, $1.90.

A refreshing drink that is high in anti-oxidants and it attributed to helping with digestion and improving blood circulation! Much needed by us after a super filling lunch session! Haha!

In the same hood, another place that I have always wanted to try! Milk & Honey Artisan Yogurt & Dessert Bar! Located at City Sqaure Mall.

I was really attracted to the beautiful froyo parfait! Because it looks really similar to the Smile Yogurt that I had in Hong Kong! Btw, if you are going to Hong Kong, do try Smile Yogurt! They have like the best froyo I have tried so far!

Pretty froyo~

You can even customise yours too!

But we decided to be lazy that day so we ordered off their menu. :D

Healthy Mix, $7.80.

Like the name suggests, this is suppose to be healthy because of the fruits!

Coffee Addict, $9.80.

Coffee addict for the coffee addict, literally. Haha! He chose this because he was in need of coffee. LOL!

Looks similar to Smile Yogurt, but taste wise, this is satisfying but Smile is still the best! Now you probably want to ask this or llao llao? I'll say llao llao. Haha! But llao llao has been quite disappointing recently too? Like the standard really changes among outlets. :/

Ending with an #ootd. A style that I'm hardly in. Haha!

Anyway, I'm really thankful to whoever you are who has been following and reading my blog all these while. :') You would notice that I currently do not update my blog as frequent and up-to-date as I used to be. Blame on my day job. Haha! But I'll still try my best over the weekend. :)

Meanwhile, you can still catch me on my instagram as well as dayre (@lirongs)! ^^

Love,
Lirong.
