Media invite: Restaurant Hoshigaoka @ Toa Payoh Safra

Restaurant Hoshigaoka - a 40 years old Japanese restaurant has newly redesigned and revamped their ala carte menu to better meet the tastebud of Singaporeans! Though the restaurant has been around for 40 years, this is actually my first time to Restaurant Hoshigaoka, which serves only authentic Japanese cuisine.

With 4 existing outlets around Singapore (Shaw House, Toa Payoh Safra, The Grandstand and Woodlands Civic Centre), the new menu will be available at all of them! :D

Restaurant Hoshigaoka first opened its door in 1972 and has since then branded itself as a family Japanese Restaurant, serving only authentic Japanese cuisine that embodies traditional Japanese cooking, sumptuous dishes and signature Japanese hospitality.

Do you know that Restaurant Hoshigaoka is actually a brand under JP Pepperdine (together with Jack's Place, Eatzi Gourment and Kkongdon BBQ) as well?

Mentai Potato Salad, $7.90.

The new menu features 5 different types of salad of which we tried this. Unlike the normal potato salad, Restaurant Hoshigaoka's version comes with mentai! I like that the potato salad was served chilled and doesn't give the feeling that it has been left on the counter for long. :) A very refreshing start to a meal indeed!

Besides the potato salad, I would recommend you to go for their salmon sashimi ($9.90) or bara sashimi salad ($8.90)!

Salmon roll, $8.90 for 3pcs or $16.90 for 6pcs.

What's a Japanese restaurant without sushi ya? These were decent but nothing to shout about.

Next, we tried 4 of Restaurant Hoshigaoka's signature main dishes.

Goma Beef Houba Yaki, $16.90.

Served on a magnolia "Houa" leaf, the slices of the 30 days Aged New Zealand Ribeye Beef was very well-marinated with sesame sauce! In fact, I ate up all the garnish as well because the goma sauce was so appetizing!

As much as it being innovative and interesting to serve the beef on a hotplate. I think I will much prefer it to be served on a normal plate itself. Reason being, the beef has already been cooked before serving on the hotplate, thus causing the beef to be further cooked and eventually overcooked when left for long.

Kurobuta Shabu Shabu, $17.90.

This is definitely made for hotpot lovers! What's better than having hotpot on a chilly night?(especially when it rains so much now!)

Black Pepper Gindara Teishoku, $24.90.

features  tender codfish drizzled with homemade black pepper sauce, served with asparagus, sliced onions and carrots. That is not all! Served at the side are fresh salmon sashimi, silky shawanmushi, miso soup, fruits, deep fried chicken and Japanese rice!

Wholesome or what?

This black pepper codfish is in fact my favourite of the night. Love the homemade black pepper sauce which instantly warms my stomach and the codfish was almost melting in my mouth! A really good combination to go with the rice! Certainly one value-for-money set. :)

Hoshigaoka Zen, $32.

Well, if you're a big eater or want something even more wholesome for sharing by 2. I suggest you to get this!

A breakdown of the set:
salmon sashimi
chilled tofu
chawanmushi
tempura
gindara teriyaki
beef misoyaki
miso soup
Japanese rice
matcha ice cream

I feel so full just typing this. Haha!

Anyway this is an iconic set dish that has been around for more than 30 years! So you definitely can't give this a miss when you're here! ^^

Tempura Ice Cream, $6.80.

Ended our tasting with a special dessert, tempura ice cream or fried ice cream. It's basically ice cream coated with tempura floor and deep fried till perfection before serving over some strawberry jam.

A very interesting twist to the usual tempura and ice cream! Who would think they could be combined and served together ya?

Anyway, Restaurant Hoshigaoka's new menu is really extensive! There are definitely much more which you can find them on their website! I think one good thing about their new menu is that it caters to the different tastebuds of different individuals. Like you would most likely find something that you want on the new menu.

What's a family Japanese Restaurant without Kid's menu eh? If I can have these cute bento, I wouldn't mind being a kid all over again! :P

Overall, food at Restaurant Hoshigaoka were decent. I think the most attractive part of the restaurant is their value-for-money sets! Do check out their daily lunch time special! ^^
